Hike #26 - Appalachian Trail: The Pinnacle and the Pulpit, Part 2; or, "Don't Overlook the Views!"

We had just reached Pulpit Rock when we ended Part 1 of our article (see Hike #26 - Appalachian Trail: The Pinnacle and The Pulpit, Part 1). We met a very nice hiker at the Pulpit who (besides offering to take a picture of us) told us that the view from the Pinnacle was amazing! After taking in the view from the Pulpit overlook, we were prepared to be amazed again.

Interviewing with Impunity - The Susan Charkes Q&A

Author Susan Charkes
On August 18, 2011, Hiking with Impunity reached out to Susan Charkes, author of AMC's Best Day Hikes Near Philadelphia, to let her know how much we appreciated the work she did on her book. As we've mentioned in previous reviews, guidebooks can do the reader - and the hiker - a disservice if their directions are inaccurate or their descriptions are incomplete. Susan Charkes' book is neither of those things, offering the reader a guidebook that will not only lead you to some of the best hikes in the Philadelphia area, but also provide you with a great read as well!

Hike #26 - Appalachian Trail: The Pinnacle and the Pulpit, Part 1; or, "Welcome to the AT"

Hiking the Appalachian Trail Many hikers want to step foot on the Appalachian Trail at some point, and on September 2, 2011, Hiking with Impunity hiked a small section of the AT.

Hike #26 - Appalachian Trail: The Pinnacle and the Pulpit; or, "Welcome to the A.T."

Hiking with Impunity on the A.T.The Appalachian Trail - 2,180 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine - is the long distance trail in the Eastern United States. Hiking with Impunity set out to accomplish two things today: complete a ten-mile hike, and set foot on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). On both counts, our mission was accomplished.

In the coming weeks, Hiking with Impunity will have not only all the details and photos from our hike today, but also a review of the book this hike was based upon - AMC's Best Day Hikes Near Philadelphia, by Susan Charkes. This trail guide published in 2010 by the Appalachian Mountain Club has been used more than a few times by Hiking with Impunity to choose and guide our hike.

To round out these special features will be the publication of what will hopefully become a new monthly feature - our first interview! Susan Charkes, author of AMC's Best Day Hikes Near Philadelphia, has kindly agreed to answer our questions about her book - how she selected the hikes to recommend; her creative inspirations; and, why her favorite hike is "the one [she's] on."

Hike #24 - French Creek State Park; or, "Navigation: Successful"

Scott's Run LakeHiking with Impunity hit French Creek State Park's trails today. We hiked on 6 different trails, including the famous Horseshoe Trail - an approximately 135 mile trail that runs from Valley Forge National Park to the Appalachian Trail right outside of Hershey, PA.

To plan the hike, all we used was the state park map and our (finally developing) good senses.

No guidebook. No advice. No suggestions. And, most importantly, no heat exhaustion! (see Hike #8: French Creek State Park; or, "How to Get Heat Exhaustion without Really Trying")

We'll be bringing you all of the information about our latest hike, including which trails we hiked and a boat-load of pictures, within the next week! Happy Trails!
