Family Hiking Day - September 24, 2011

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (AMC) has designated Saturday, September 24, 2011 as Family Hiking Day! To be held on National Public Lands Day, the AMC is encouraging families to take to the trails - specifically the Appalachian Trail. The almost 2,180 mile trail does have some portions which would be suitable for families.

Hiking with Impunity supports the AMC's encouragement of families going on a hike together. Please visit their website here for more information about this planned event.

Finished Appalachian Trail in 46 Days??!!

Purportedly the woman found in this story, finished a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT) in 46 days! For those of my readers who don't know much about the AT, it spans from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Mount Katahdin, Maine. The entire length of the AT is almost 2200 miles. To thru-hike the AT means that you hiked from end to end. It typically can take a hiker, depending on fitness level, 3 to 7 months to thru-hike the AT. The Appalachian Mountain Conservancy recognizes thru-hikers, operating on the honor system.

The woman in the linked article did it in 46 days! Whatcha think? Click on the title of this article, and then post your comment at the bottom.
